1 – Your roof’s color
You probably won’t be changing the color of your roof, so it’s going to be a major factor in your choices. Is your roof a strong warm or cool tone? You’ll want colors that match, so everything looks consistent. On the other hand, if your roof is a neutral color – like black or white – then you can choose pretty much any colors you like.
2 – Stone or brickwork
If your home incorporates stone elements, or has brickwork, this should be factored into your paint choices as well. Brick is typically a warm color and should be paired with other warm colors – or at least complementary colors. Otherwise, the stone or brick could feel like it ‘sticks out’ and doesn’t match the other colors.
3 – Always use plenty of swatches or test painting patches
One of the hardest things about selecting home paint is that the lighting within a store, or on a website, is nothing like natural outdoor lighting. It will always look different once you get it in the sunlight. There’s really no good way of knowing how a paint will look in real life without applying it to the side of your house and seeing how it looks over the course of a day.
Also, consider reflections and refractions, especially if you have water features. For example, does your swimming pool reflect light onto the nearby wall? That will change the appearance of the paint as well. Do as much testing as you can, before committing.
