Tips On Kitchen Cabinet Painting Straight From The Pros

Tips On Kitchen Cabinet Painting Straight From The Pros

If you’re looking to update your kitchen and save a little money, redoing your own kitchen cabinet paint is a fun project most handy people can do themselves. Professional kitchen cabinet painters in Westchester County typically have access to better materials, but there’s a lot of satisfaction from doing your work.

So, let’s talk about a few tips that will make the job easier. And if you ever need a hand, C.E.T. Painting is always here to help!

Three Big Tips For Repainting Your Cabinets

1 – Label everything

Probably the biggest single mistake we often see people make is not labeling all the cabinets and hardware. If you’re repainting more than a couple of doors or cabinets, you want to keep track of which pieces came from where. This is typically best done with sticky notes at first, then when the repainted piece is moved to dry, attach the label nearby.

Also be sure to do the same with any smaller pieces of hardware, like knobs and hinges. Give each cabinet its own box, so these don’t get mixed up. Then reassembling your kitchen becomes so much easier, with fewer chances for error.

2 – Clean and dry thoroughly

Simply put, the cleaner the cabinet pieces are before you repaint them, the better the paint job will go.  Clean everything to the best of your ability with high-grade cleaning products and de-greasers. Then make sure it’s also completely dry before you start.

Also, to be clear, this is still necessary if you’re planning on sanding away the top layers of paint and finish. If there’s too much dirt and grime on top, the sander can actually push that into the lower layers of wood.

3 – Cover everything which shouldn’t be painted.

DIYers often underestimate how far paint can travel, especially if they’re using spray paints. If you’re going to try painting the cabinets in place, absolutely everything else in the room should be covered with cloths or tarps to keep paint off of them.

If that seems too difficult, you may be better off removing as many pieces as you can and painting them separately.
