A Backyard Built for Chilling Out
This Putnam Valley property has a big ol’ wood pool deck surrounded by some pretty mature trees, a woodland on one side, and a bright white picket fence on the other. The outdoor space is perfect for lounging around, having a party, or just plain enjoying the pool, but all that time in the sun, rain, and snow had left its mark on the deck.
We at C.E.T. Painting came in and gave the old girl a bit of TLC – restoring the exterior surfaces and getting the pool area in top shape for some fresh protection. We focused on the wood decking that surrounds the pool, as well as the fencing and some other exterior features that help frame the backyard.
What the Deck Was Screaming at Us
The existing deck coating had simply had it. Big chunks of it were peeling off, flaking away, and exposing the wood underneath – you could see it right across the walking surface, in spots.
The worst of it was along the high-traffic areas and around the pool, where all that water and foot traffic had basically worn the old finish down to nothing. Some boards were still holding onto bits of the old coat, while others were just plain bare, making the whole thing look like it was falling apart.
This wasn’t just a cosmetic thing, though. Once a deck coating starts to go, it can start to absorb water in all the wrong places. Slap some new paint on without fixing the problem first and it’ll just end up peeling right back off.
Preparation Was the Real Star of the Show
For this project, the real action happened before we even started painting.
The C.E.T. Painting crew started by getting rid of all the loose, flaking stuff on the deck. We used power tools and a good old fashioned scraper to get rid of all the peeling sections and create a nice smooth surface to work with. We made sure to clear all the debris away from the work area while we were at it, and took care to avoid getting any of that loose paint or dust in the pool, or on the fence or surrounding structures.
Because the deck goes all the way around an actual swimming pool, we had to be super careful about how we worked. We didn’t want to let any of that loose paint or dust get in the water, or contaminate the pool coping or any of the other finishes.
We made sure to pay extra attention to all the areas where the deck meets other things:
- The pool coping and the curvy edge of the pool itself
- The fence posts and gates
- The stairs and all the changes in elevation
- Any covered areas
- The old shed and the structural posts
- The high-traffic areas around the pool that were just plain worn out
Getting that all sorted out gave us a solid foundation to work with for the new exterior finish.
Restoring the Perimeter
The white fence makes a big difference out here in the backyard. It creates a clean line around the pool, and contrasts nice with the darker deck and surrounding woods.
Now that it’s been freshened up, the fence looks brighter and way more even, which helps frame the pool and defines the outdoor space. We paid close attention to the details on the posts, rails, gate sections, and all the narrow vertical bits to get the finish just right.
We didn’t just treat the fence as an afterthought – we made sure it all worked together with the pool, deck, landscaping, and all the other exterior features.
The white finish gives the backyard a cleaner, more organized look and helps the property’s classic style shine through.
A Surface Ready for New Life

The photos from the project show just how much work went into getting the deck ready for a new finish. We didn’t just slap some paint over the top – we went in and got rid of all the old, peeling stuff so we could start fresh.
This process gave us a cleaner, more dependable surface to work with, and reduced the contrast between the old and new finishes so the new coat can do its job and look its best.
The project fixed up the area by tackling:
- Peeling and failing deck coatings
- Exposed and weathered wood boards
- Uneven wear around the pool
- Loose surface material and debris
- Worn areas near gates, stairs, and walkways
- The way the surrounding white fence looked
Why This Project Needed More Than Just a Quick Paint Job
Big pool decks are a whole different story when it comes to exterior painting. They’re out in the elements all the time – getting rained on, walked all over, blasted by the sun, and who knows what else.
For that reason, successful deck restoration is all about preparation. The new finish can only perform as well as the surface it’s on top of. Scraping, sanding, cleaning, and stabilizing the old finish are the essential steps, especially when big areas are already starting to peel.
By putting in the time during the preparation phase, C.E.T. Painting was able to address the root of the problem rather than just slapping a new coat over it.
The Outdoor Space is Looking Great Again
The restored exterior elements give the property a cleaner foundation for poolside living.

Now the freshly painted white fence creates a bright border around the pool, and the deck is all ready to rock with a new, consistent and protective finish. All in all, these improvements help the pool area feel better maintained and more visually connected to the house and the surrounding woods.
This project shows how a good exterior painting job can improve more than just curb appeal. Out by the pool, it can also help protect one of the biggest and most heavily used outdoor surfaces on the property.
Built to Last in Putnam Valley
Homes in Putnam Valley are subject to hot summers and cold winters, and that’s just the start of the ordeal – they also have to deal with moisture, fallen leaves and those irritating freeze-and-thaw cycles. As a result, you’ll need to look after your exterior wood surfaces with some regular maintenance if they’re going to survive the seasonal battering.
This project showcases C.E.T. Painting’s patient and meticulous approach to getting things done right – from start to finish. We planned every stage of the project carefully, taking into account the condition of the existing surface, the pool environment, and the kind of finish that’s going to stand up to being outside.
Closing
The Putnam Valley pool deck was in a pretty sad state – it needed a lot more than a hasty slap of paint to sort it out. We’re talking serious work – the removal of all that peeling material, dodging the swimming pool with care, and giving the surrounding fencing and outdoor structures some much-needed TLC.
The end result was a space that’s been transformed from a worn-out, failing disaster to a cleaner, more protected outdoor area – just what people want from a deck. And by putting the prep work first, we created the solid foundation needed for a finish that’s both durable and attractive.
