A Guide to the Most Popular Paint Colors of 2021: Part 2

In our last blog, we touched on some of the most popular exterior painting colors of 2021 and also discussed some of the leading trends homeowners are following these days. With this blog, our team of Westchester painters is going even deeper into the details and exploring some of today’s most popular trends, including some old favorites that are making a comeback.

If you’re considering repainting your home, hopefully, part two of C.E.T. Painting’s 2021 color guide will provide you with all the inspiration you need.

  1. Brown with Warm Neutrals

Pairing a darker brown with warmer neutral colors can be a great fit, especially if you’re using a shade with red undertones that enables you to play around a bit when it comes to your color scheme. Brown looks great with warmer accent colors like beige and cream, or gray, as well as lighter accents too.

An added benefit of painting your home brown is that it can open up options for your exterior that other colors simply can’t, like adding bronze or metal porch lights. Even things like brass doorknobs and knockers will take on a whole new look with the right shade of brown. It works very well for Tudor-style homes and other architectural styles that boast traditionally darker colors with cream facades.

  1. Slate or Navy & White

Another popular trend we’re seeing this year is the pairing of either slate or navy blue with broad, white trim. This is because it can really play up the lines of your home, regardless of its architectural style. Blue is a popular color because it has a calming effect.

This color combination in particular is great for craftsman-style homes, coastal bungalows, and cottages, as well as more Victorian and Georgian-style architecture. This is because often, these styles of homes will make use of dark greys and blues; blue and white is a perfect fit on nearly any of today’s modern homes.

  1. Pale Gray & Brick Red

This year, gray with red accents is extremely popular. Of course, gray is an old classic, but these days we’re seeing a lot of homeowners pairing it with red accents to really provide a unique look. You can choose any shade of red you like, as long as it elicits a good balance with the other colors of your home. For example, you could pair your white or gray trim with red shutters or porch railings to make your exterior more unique and pleasing to the eye.

For those with farmhouse-style homes, this is an ideal color scheme, especially when favoring barn red.

  1. Dark, Moody Gray with a Splash of White

Although gray has long since been a popular exterior color, it’s only recently that homeowners have begun to really favor darker grays to create a moodier color scheme. Deep charcoal and white trim can really catch the eye and make your home’s exterior stand out from its surroundings. Stormy gray might seem an unlikely choice, but for more modern and minimalist architecture with straight, clean lines, it can be ideal, especially when you add natural wood elements and exterior fixtures.

  1. Light Sage Green & Terracotta Red

If you’re looking for an earthier feel for your home’s exterior, light sage green and terracotta red might be just what you’re looking for. If you have a lot of woods around your home or a large garden, earthier tones will work really well. However, they work best on craftsman-style homes, cottages, or bungalows.

This color scheme is also popular among those who own Victorian-style homes that want to do something a little bolder than the average white/gray color scheme. Incorporating light olive greens for example, with terracotta red and cream accents will make a Victorian home truly stand out amidst its neighbors.

  1. Black-on-Black

Here’s another trend, like dark moody gray, that is becoming ever more popular these days. It’s quite a bold color choice for homeowners but in many settings, it really works. Since white is today’s most popular exterior home color due to its neutrality, painting your exterior black can really make a statement; this is especially true when adding a brightlycolored door or other lighter fixtures.

For those with Victorian homes in an urban setting, black-on-black will give your exterior a more gothic feel and subtler shades can make it still feel welcoming.

  1. Pale Green or Blue & Creamy White

Another popular trend we’re seeing is using paler greens, like mint green, or blues as accents on creamy white bases. This is because they’ll still catch the eye while offering a lighter, airier touch. You can add some darker fixtures, like a door that’s brown or black, to really set things off without being too overpowering. This color scheme evokes wide-open spaces and blue skies, as well as the ocean, so it can also be paired easily with sandy colors and beige accents.

Although you’ll find this color scheme will work in a variety of settings, we find it works best on beach houses and Victorian homes.
