Part of our secret to success is that we’re constantly following the state of the art in painting while looking for new techniques and best practices. Tech revolutions are everywhere, even in the seemingly simple world of building paint, and we’re always keeping an eye out for better ways to do our jobs. Our long history of satisfied clients shows how that approach works out well for everyone.

So, let’s look to the future. We’ve been following some very interesting new technologies and ideas lately. Not all of these will necessarily become commercial products, but it’s exciting to think that they might!

5 New Innovations that Commercial Painting Contractors Want to Go Mainstream

1 – Antimicrobial Coatings

Let’s start with one that’s already coming into use: antimicrobial paint. The COVID epidemic reminded everyone of just how easy it is for germs and other microbial life to spread within buildings, and soon, even your paint will be able to help keep you healthy.

Paints are now coming out with extra coatings or additives, such as silver. Just adding tiny particles of silver to a paint can make it hostile to a wide range of microbes. Other anti-bacterial additives are also being experimented with, which will be able to extend the protections offered.

Either way, this will be an amazing addition to interior paints, and will help stop the spread of disease in businesses, schools, hospitals, and more!

2 – Dirt-Resistant Paint

Paint typically needs to be cleaned regularly, both for its look, as well as to prevent dirt and grime from harming the paint. But…what if regular cleaning wasn’t necessary? It turns out that adding microscopic (nanoscale) particles of titanium dioxide to paint creates a surface that is remarkably resistant to most kinds of dirt and grime. This type of paint is sometimes called “self-cleaning” for that reason.

As titanium dioxide isn’t particularly expensive, and it’s entirely safe for inhabited spaces, we expect “self-cleaning paint” to quickly gain popularity – especially in commercial spaces where looking great is a high priority. Not to mention, it could significantly reduce cleaning costs for large interiors, so the paint would be able to pay for itself quite quickly.

3 – Solar Paint

Now, let’s start looking towards ideas that are currently just concepts, or being tested out – like solar paint.

The basic idea is to embed paint with light-sensitive particles that generate tiny amounts of electricity when hit with UV light, such as sunlight. Add some wires running through the paint, and the walls of your home or business could contribute to its energy production alongside other technologies like solar panels.

The challenges here are cost and efficiency. Adding a lot of wiring all over a house would add significantly to costs, and possibly also to the ecological footprint. To be worthwhile, it would need to contribute more energy to your building than it costs to create and implement. Can researchers find a way to make solar paint a net positive? We certainly hope so.

4 – Spray-on Antennas

Along the same lines, here’s another fun thought: If you’ve ever struggled with a poor cell phone or WIFI reception within your home or business, someday soon your paint could help with that!

Certain additives in paint can add to its wireless conductivity, rather than inhibiting reception. So one day, your home or office might be one gigantic antenna, allowing you to have great cell and WIFI service regardless of the architecture around you.

This technology could also have very interesting applications outside of basic painting too – such as being able to spray antennas directly onto any surface! This could allow easier use of wireless technologies in outdoor spaces, or quickly convert a basic conference room into one ready for a high-tech convention.

Then afterward, just remove the paint, and the surface is back to normal.

5 – Smart Paint

Everything else is becoming “smart,” so why not paint? This is another one that’s still mostly sci-fi now, but we’ve seen proof-of-concept demonstrations so it’s not total fantasy.

Basically, paint can have a conductive nickel grid embedded within it, which reacts to minor changes in electrical conductivity when touched. In other words, one day it may be possible to turn a wall into a touchscreen, without the screen.

Think about old James Bond movies where someone just puts their palm on a seemingly normal spot on a wall, and it activates a hidden door. Or imagine controlling your home’s thermostat just by tapping on the wall in a room you want to change. Those are the sorts of things that smart paint might one day enable.

However, like with solar paint, it’s going to be a challenge to make the technology cheap, practical, and eco-friendly enough to be worthwhile.
